NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona College has established the Center for Health Care Analytics in the Hagan School of Business. The focus of this Center will be the development of Health Care management capabilities in drawing clinical and business intelligence from massive repositories that are available across the continuum of the health care industry.
The center will be a multi-disciplinary program necessary to complement the health care focus drawing professional expertise from the Iona faculty, including from information systems, health care management, finance/accounting, operations research and other programs.
“Iona’s Hagan School of Business graduate students will have exposure to the diverse skills necessary for an analytics-based organization in which clinical and business intelligence are essential for achieving quality, performance and economic success,” said Paul Savage, program director of Health Care Management and director of the new Center for Health Care Analytics.
While health care has traditionally focused on brief patient treatment episodes, disease conditions and restoration, the new paradigm will be population health, prevention and wellness initiatives in which the best practices of clinicians are recognizable in a decision-support environment. The information and machine-learning technology now exist to transform massive amounts of data and clinical experiences into organizational-level performance improvement as well as the more traditional operations management capabilities and business intelligence.
“According to the McKinsey Global Institute, by 2018, the United States will face a shortage of more than 1.5 million managers, analysts and other workers who are well-versed in the principles and use of analytics,” added Savage. “It is from this perspective that the Center for Health Care Analytics in the Hagan School of Business at Iona College has been created.”
The Center will provide a specific focus on the needs of executives, governance, regulatory and clinical leaders in the health care field. “Iona will be positioned to quickly demonstrate the value of analytics within an industry unfamiliar with such tools while providing our graduates meaningful capabilities for their careers and entry to all aspects of public health, provider organizations and ancillary health care businesses, from pharmaceutical to insurance and medical device industries.”
In addition to developing a graduate-level curriculum for Health Care Analytics (NYS Dept. of Education certification), the Center will be active in the research arena, seeking grants and making applications to entities throughout the country while participating in other professional activities with industry associations, regulatory agencies and public entities that are recognized as industry stakeholders. Examples of these efforts are the relationship with the Academic Consortium of the Westchester County Association, the development of a Population Health program (approved Physician Practice Management certificate program) with the Westchester County Medical Society, and research grant applications to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, National Institutes of Health and the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid.
Organizations interested in utilizing the Center are invited to contact Vincent Calluzzo, Ph.D., dean of the Hagan School of Business at vcalluzzo@iona.edu or Paul Savage, director of the Center for Health Care Analytics at psavage@iona.edu or (914) 633-2256.
