NEW ROCHELLE, NY — In the fall of 2007 a group of New Rochelle fathers gathered at City Hall to discuss starting a lacrosse program. Subsequent meetings occurred and the birth of youth lacrosse for boys and girls happened in the spring of 2008. The first season brought out 68 boys and girls and the 2013 season had 240 boys and girls in grades k-8.
The league is run by a board of directors led by Pat Swift who one of the founding fathers of the program and also was the New Rochelle High School coach from 1991 – 2000. As the High School coach we really struggled as other town had youth programs.
“We always had the athletes, but we were always behind the neighboring communities,” said Swift. “Every few years we would have a solid team. What he was most proud of was that we had 5 Academic All Americans and now other team could boast that.”
The board of directors currently consists of Pat, Todd King, Maija Ruggerio, Matte Phillips, Larry Luftig, Steve Robbins, Eric Cruz and newcomers Derek Deutsch, Ali Giordano and John Erber.
New Rochelle Youth Lacrosse is honored to support and maintain the Eric Tutera Youth Lacrosse Scholarship Fund in memory of Eric’s exemplary life as a scholar/athlete. Eric Tutera was a former captain of Swift’s New Rochelle High School lacrosse team. As a three-year varsity player and two-year starter, Eric was the epitome of a team player. He was respected by his teammates, coaches and opposing players. Eric tragically passed away in an accident in the spring of 2008.
