NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle Council on the Arts’ Sound Shore Shakespeare Festival returns in April to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the birth of the Bard of Avon. The Sound Shore Shakespeare Festival will run from April 3rd to 30th, with a variety of Shakespeare-themed events planned, including films, concerts, lectures and performances. Among the treats in store: three different versions of “The Taming of the Shrew” will be shown in the Ossie Davis Theater of the New Rochelle Public Library. The free films will begin at 7:00 pm with introductions by Iona professors Amy Stackhouse and T. J. Moretti, editors of The Shakespeare Newsletter.
On Thursday April 3, the 1967 version of The Taming of the Shrew will be introduced by Professor Stakhouse. Directed by Franco Zefferelli, the classic movie stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and runs 122 minutes.
For Spring vacation week, when high school students may wish to join adult audiences for the festival, the library will show Ten Things I Hate About You on Thursday, April 17. Professor Stackhouse will also introduce the film, which was directed by Gil Junger and stars Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. The 1999 movie is rated PG-13 and runs 97 minutes.
The 1953 film, Kiss Me Kate, will wrap-up the series on Thursday April 24 and will be introduced by Professor T. J. Moretti. Directed by George Sidney, the movie stars Kathryn Grayson, Ann Miller and
Howard Keel, and features songs by Cole Porter. It runs 109 minutes.
The library has additional copies The Taming of the Shrew for those interested in checking it out to
read or re-read. The books are available at the library’s Registration Desk for patrons with New
Rochelle or other Westchester Library System cards.
