NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Police apprehended a burglary suspect following a sunrise car chase through a residential neighborhood near New Rochelle High School.
New Rochelle Police arrested Anthony Clowe, 43, of New Rochelle. He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless driving, and two counts of burglary.
The man is believed tied to a series of smash and grab robberies at four Chinese restaurants in New Rochelle. He has been nicknamed the “Kung Po Bandit”.
The car chase turned into a foot race after the suspect ditched his vehicle in the driveway of a house at 232 Clinton Avenue. The vehicle, a red Subaru station wagon with a bright blue Barnard School magnet on the back, was registered to an owner residing at 214 Clinton Avenue.
A police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of a “red SUV” from the Hung Sin robbery on Saturday morning at around 6 a.m. Monday in the parking lot at the Bracey Houses.
NRPD Lt. Adrian Navarette attempted to pull the car over on Lincoln Avenue when it sped away. Navarette followed the vehicle up Lincoln Avenue onto Webster Avenue. The chase covered Webster Avenue, Mayflower Avenue, Eastchester Road, Mount Joy Place, Albert Place, Pershing, Faneuil Place, ending on Clinton Avenue.
The Kung Po Bandit’s spree began Friday night or early Saturday morning when he smashed out the front door of the Sun Hing Chinese Restaurant located at 766 North Avenue, on the corner of Eastchester Road. The owner of the store said the burglar stole $60 or $70 that was left in a cashbox behind the counter.
The Kung Po Bandit continued his spree on Monday morning.
He smashed out the front door glass at the Red Ruby located at 642 North Avenue near the Iona College Dunkin’ Donuts (below).
He broke a side window at the Tasty Kitchen located at 340 Pelham Road (below).
He smashed in the front door of the Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant located at 418 Pelham Road near Mamma Fransceca (below).
Neighbors reported damage to their lawns on Faneuil Place related to the car chase. Police are accessing video surveillance tape from some homes on Faneuil Place
Police cordoned off the area around the Red Suburu station wagon on Clinton Avenue (below).
Police are canvassing retail store fronts throughout New Rochelle with special attention to Chinese Restaurants. Police are asking units to look for black marks, possibly from a felt-tip marker.
