NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A man was beaten to death behind the CVS store located at 218/222 North Avenue in New Rochelle, NY.
New Rochelle police responded to a call at about 12:00 a.m. Tuesday. The man was found bleeding badly from the head area. First units on the scene found the man had no pulse and requested EMS on a rush.
The man was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
Police set up a crime scene overnight.
Initial reports are that the man suffered a head wound after he was struck in the head by a glass bottle. The man was reportedly struck after a fight broke out among several men who were consuming alcohol in the New Rochelle Parking Lot behind the CVS store.
The men may have been part of a group of “homeless” men that regularly drink and sleep along the wall behind the CVS. One witness said the men were arguing politics and continued to do so even after the man was laying on the pavement with no pulse.
Police were still on the scene as of 7 a.m. Parts of the New Rochelle Parking Lot are closed off put the parking lot is accessible.
There should be video surveillance cameras at that location but there are not.
In March 2, 2010, when the CVS was seeking to open, the Zoning Board of Appeals, chaired by now-Judge Susan Kettner required cameras be installed as a condition of being granted a Certificate of Occupancy. Kettner was adamant on the points of installing lighting and cameras in the alley and back of CVS.
CVS Wins Approval for New Store on North Avenue
CVS received approval from the New Rochelle Zoning Board last night to open a new store at 218 North Avenue…CVS told the board that deliveries to the store will take place only from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and that their garbage will be picked up at that time as well. They also will put up cameras on the outside of the building.
In 2012, when CVS sought an easement for their delivery trucks, the of cameras was brought up again but no action was taken by CVS.
At the Citizens to be Heard session in January 2014, the issue of security cameras at CVS was bought up by James O’Toole, a member of the Downtown Business Improvement District board.
