BINGHAMTON, NY — The Iona College women’s soccer team fell to 2-2 on the season with a 5-0 loss to Binghamton Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats found the net three times in the first half, before connecting for two more in the final 45 minutes.

“Today’s game shows that you can’t show up expecting to win,” said head coach Linda Hathorn. “We didn’t give Binghamton a fight, or ourselves a chance to win.”

Binghamton struck for their first goal in the 22nd minute, when the Gaels allowed an own goal. A cross from the Bearcats deflected off the Iona defense and into the net as Binghamton took a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats extended the lead to two on a goal by Katie O’Neill in the 28th minute, before O’Neill scored her second of the day in the 39th minute. Binghamton scored its final goals in the 71st and 74th minutes.

Iona was outshot in the contest 18-7, including an 11-3 deficit on attempts on goal. Iona graduate goalkeeper Lauren Ferris made six saves in 75 minutes of action. Freshman Morgan McBrier did not face a shot in her 15 minutes in net.

“Our players need to take the time to reflect on this performance and decide whether this is who we will be as a program moving forward,” said Hathorn.

Iona is back in action Friday, when it travels to Albany for a 5:00 pm start.
