NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Sophomore forward Jon-Luke Ferrandino’s 63rd minute goal proved to be the difference as the Iona College men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2014 season with a 2-1 victory over Yale Tuesday evening at Reese Stadium.

The Gaels fell behind quickly as a goal by the Bulldogs’ Henos Musie 30 seconds into the contest gave Yale a 1-0 lead. Taking a pass from Henry Albrecht, Musie took a shot from the left wing from 10 yards out that slipped in for the early one goal advantage.

In the 31st minute, the Maroon & Gold evened the score on forward Ignacio Maganto’s second goal of the year. When his own corner kick was blocked back into the senior’s possession, Maganto rifled a shot into the top corner for his 18th career goal.

Midway through the second half, Iona picked up the go-ahead tally. After a series of nifty moves and a back foot pass from sophomore midfielder Alex Ramos evaded the Yale defense, Ferrandino connected with his left foot just inside the far post for his second tally of the season, and first career game-winner.

The Bulldogs had several chances late in the contest, including a corner kick with six ticks left on the clock, but could not even the contest.

Iona held an 18-4 advantage in shots, and a 4-3 cushion in corner kicks in the contest. Iona freshman goalkeeper Jacobo Aparicio made his first career start for the Gaels and picked up the win. Yale netminder Ryan Simpson made three saves for the Bulldogs.

Iona is back in action Friday when it travels to Albany for a 7:30 pm kickoff.
