NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona College women’s soccer freshman forward Julia Campagna (Monroe, NY) was recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as the league’s Rookie of the Week, it was announced today. The Gaels have claimed all three MAAC Rookie of the Week awards this season, after teammate Charlotte Stuart earned the award each of the past two weeks.
Campagna posted a multi-point game, recording three points on a goal and an assist, in the Gaels’ 4-2 win over UAlbany. Campagna scored the game’s first goal in the 14th minute. Taking a feed from senior midfielder Gabriella Fuduli, Campagna connected from ten yards out for her first collegiate goal. Shortly into the second half, with Iona ahead 2-0, Campagna assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning score. Taking a feed from teammate Christine Rebus, Campagna took the ball down the right side and fed teammate Erika Flowers to give Iona a 3-0 lead.
The Gaels, 3-3-0 on the season, continue non-conference action Friday afternoon, when they welcome Fordham to Mazzella Field for a 3:00 pm start.
