NEW ROCHELLE, NY — President Judith Huntington announced earlier the week the first recipient of The College of New Rochelle’s Mariano Rivera Scholarship. Tiffany Tavarez, a resident of the Bronx, was selected to receive the scholarship for being an outstanding Hispanic woman who has achieved academic excellence while being actively involved in her church and community.

While at the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music, Tavarez performed well in her academic studies and was active in many church and community service projects.

“We are so proud to have Tiffany as our first Mariano Rivera Scholarship recipient. Her academic excellence, community involvement, and work with her church align perfectly with the College’s Ursuline heritage and mission of encouraging students to fully develop their talents, gain greater understanding of themselves, and help others,” Huntington said. “For over 110 years, The College of New Rochelle has been committed to educating young women like Tiffany, to promote leadership skills and self-confidence and instill in them the value of a liberal arts education.”

Rivera added: “Tiffany has spirit, passion, and determination. We hope that this scholarship gives her the opportunity to continue to pursue her career path and excel in her goals. With focus and faith in God, we know that she will go far.”

The Mariano Rivera Scholarship will cover room and board, tuition, and fees for each of the four years Tavarez attends The College of New Rochelle. To maintain the scholarship, she must meet academic standards set by the College and continue to be active in a community leadership role on campus.

Tavarez, whose family is originally from Puerto Rico, will be the first member of her family to attend college.

“To know that I will be able to attend such a distinguished women’s college is a wonderful feeling. I am honored to have been chosen for this special award,” she said. “My family and I are grateful to both The College of New Rochelle and the Riveras for this great opportunity.”
