NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College women’s soccer team fell to 3-4 on the season, following a 1-0 loss to Fordham University Friday afternoon at Mazzella Field. An own goal surrendered by the Gaels in the 77th minute represented the game’s only tally.
“It was a pretty good performance today,” said head coach Linda Hathorn. “We had opportunities throughout the game, but couldn’t convert.”
The two teams traded chances in the first half, with Fordham holding a 4-2 advantage in shots in the period. An attempt by freshman Julia Campagna in the third minute that went wide was Iona’s golden chance in the first.
The offense picked up in the second period, with the team combining for nine shots. Iona put six shots across in the second, including an attempt by Campagna in the 61st minute that hit the crossbar. A rebound attempt by sophomore Erika Flowers followed that went just high.
Just over 15 minutes later, Iona let in the game-winner. Following a cross from Natalie Sims, Fordham’s Sydney White gathered the ball and took a shot. The ball ricocheted off a Gaels defender looking to clear the attempt and into the net.
Iona freshman goalkeeper Morgan McBrier, inserted in the 60th minute, made one save for the Gaels. Fordham’s Megan Fitzgerald, who entered at the start of the second half, made two saves and picked up the win.
“We’re still trying to find ourselves and find that killer instinct,” said Hathorn. “Once we do that, we’re going to be a team to be dealt with. Until that happens, we’re going to take it game by game looking to improve, and we did that today, even if we didn’t get the result we wanted.”
The Gaels continue non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Hartford.
