NEW ROCHELLE, NY — After seeing its 11-match win streak come to an end last Saturday, The College of New Rochelle volleyball team got right back to its winning ways Wednesday night, dismantling Sarah Lawrence College, 3-0, to improve to 12-4 on the season.
ECAC and HVIAC Rookie of the Week Fabiola Padilla Rios (San Juan, PR) tallied match-highs with eight kills, hitting .636, and seven digs, adding two assists, two aces, and a solo block. Melanie Lopez Soto (Gurabo, PR) added a match-high 16 assists and nine aces, while Tiany Perez Diaz (Junco, PR) set a new school record with 13 aces.
The Blue Angels hit .425 for the match, and converted at a .500 clip for the first and third sets. Meanwhile, the CNR defense held the Sarah Lawrence offense in check all night, as the Gryphons hit -.270 for the match and did not record a kill in the second or third sets.
The Gryphons scored three of the first four points of the match before the Blue Angels scored four straight to take a lead they did not relinquish for the rest of the set. Leading 15-10, CNR closed out the set with a 10-4 run to take a 25-14 set win.
After relinquishing the first point of the second set, the Blue Angels score the next nine points and raced to a 25-4 win, including eight aces from Perez Diaz.
The third set was much of the same, as Lopez Soto served up five aces in an 11-0 run to open the set en route to a 25-2 win.
The Blue Angels get back in action on Saturday, hosting Mitchell College and the College of St. Elizabeth in a tri-match slated to begin at 11:00 AM in the Wellness Center.
