NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In front of a large Family Weekend crowd, The College of New Rochelle volleyball team defeated York (NY) College last week, 3-0, to improve to 21-7 on the season. The Cardinals fall to 4-21.
Fabiola Padilla Rios (San Juan, PR/University Garden) paced the Blue Angels with match-highs of 14 kills and six aces, adding seven digs. The rookie hit.524 on the day, the second best single match hitting percentage performance in program history (minimum 12 kills). Meghan King (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) added eight kills, hitting .429. Melanie Lopez Soto (Gurabo, PR/Notre Dame) handed out a match-high 20 assists, while Rosa Angeles (Wappingers Falls, NY/John Jay) dug up a team-high nine balls.
NaaDira Patrick led York with five kills.
The Blue Angels out hit the Cardinals, .309 to -.104, and tallied 13 service aces to York’s 4.
The College of New Rochelle scored six of the first eight points in the match, and used a 7-1 run to turn a 9-5 advantage into a 16-6 lead. With the Blue Angels leading, 21-14, CNR scored four straight points to take the first set, 25-14.
The second set began with CNR scoring five of the first six, but the Cardinals held tough, and trailed by just two, 12-10, before the Blue Angels used an 8-4 run to seemingly take control with a 20-14 lead. York scored the next five consecutive points to pull to within one, 20-19, but did not get any closer as CNR closed out the set with a 5-1 run to take the set, 25-20.
The third set was a showcase of Padilla Rios, as the rookie tallied six kills and five aces while serving out the final 10 points of the set as the Blue Angels cruised to a 25-4 win, and a 3-0 match victory.
The Blue Angels closed out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Wednesday, October 22, hosting Albertus Magnus College at 7:00 PM in the Wellness Center. The five CNR seniors were honored prior to the start of the match.
