The Monroe Mustangs women’s volleyball team completed its highly-successful 2014 regular season with two wins in Maryland on Saturday. Monroe defeated Northern Virginia CC 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-11, 25-7) and Frederick 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-10) in their final regular season matches to conclude a 34-4 campaign as the #17-ranked NJCAA team in their first season in Division I.
Against NOVA freshman Ashley Ramos was a force with 17 kills and two service aces. Freshman Nelmarie Cruz added 12 kills. Defensively, sophomore Nerishka Cruz who was one of seven Mustangs honored during last week’s senior night, had twelve digs. Another graduating sophomore, Edmarie Freytes had a whopping 30 assists.
Much more dominating in the match against Frederick, Monroe got 14 kills from sophomore Lee Ann Ocasio, 10 from Ramos, and another 20 assists by Freytes.
The Mustangs will travel back to Maryland next weekend for a one-game Regional playoff against Harford, a team Monroe defeated earlier this season. The winner will advance to the District playoff in Jefferson, MO the week after.
