FAIRFIELD, CT — The Iona College men’s soccer team played Fairfield University to a 1-1 draw Wednesday evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Lessing Field. The result moves the Gaels’ record to 5-2-1 in league play, and 8-5-3 overall on the year.
After a scoreless first half in which the Gaels were held to just one shot, Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute on a goal by Ben Wignall.
Senior Ignacio Maganto knotted the game in the 50th minute when he converted his third penalty kick of the season. Maganto now has nine goals on the year, tying his career high set a season ago.
Iona held a 7-2 shot advantage in the second half, but could not score the go-ahead tally. In the overtime period, the two teams combined for three shots total as both squads collected one point in the league standings.
Iona goalkeeper Julian Petrello made four saves in net, while Fairfield netminders Matt Turner and Joe Martin combined for three saves.
The Gaels are back in back in action Saturday, when they welcome to Quinnipiac for a 3:00 pm start.
