NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College volleyball team came from down 2-0 in a thrilling five-set win over Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. The Gaels used double-doubles from three performers and took the final three sets in the victory.
Senior Catrina Warren led the way with 22 kills and 14 digs, adding two aces and two blocks for a match-high 25.0 points. Rookie Kassandra Darnaby had a career-best 20 kills, posting a .362 hitting percentage while adding 10 digs, two aces and two blocks. Senior setter Caris Myles was the third Gael with a double-double, posting a season-best 54 assists and 14 digs. She also added five kills on 10 attempts with one error (.400 hitting percentage). Senior Shannon Ward had a strong effort with 15 kills and five blocks.
The Gaels were also helped out by 34 digs by senior libero Katie Marabella. Senior Taylor Cembalisty posted seven kills and 15 digs to go along with five assists and three blocks while sophomore Karly White had three kills and three blocks. Sophomore Meghan Nelson came off the bench and recorded two key aces during the Gaels comeback effort.
Rider was led by senior Kayla Wong’s 14 kills. Four different performers had 10 or more digs with libero Emma Aldaya’s 18 leading the way.
The Maroon & Gold finishes the 2014 regular season this Saturday at Manhattan before traveling to Lake Buena Vista, FL for the 2014 MAAC Championship.
