College of New Rochelle’s Ellis and Cambel Receive HVIAC Weekly Honors

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -– The College of New Rochelle has swept the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) Women’s Basketball weekly awards, with Jah-Leah Ellis and Hannah Cambel being named Player and Rookie of the week, respectively, it was released Tuesday by the conference office.

Ellis posted a monster week for The College of New Rochelle, averaging 21.7 points, 24.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 3.3 steals and 1.7 blocks per game in helping the Blue Angels to a 3-0 week, including repeating as Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament champions. She kicked off the week with a 12 point, 18 rebound, four assist, three steal and two block performance in CNR’s HVIAC opener against Pratt Institute. She upped her totals to 25 points, 27 rebounds, eight assists and three steals against College at Old Westbury in the opening round of the Shabazz Tournament, then capped off her Tournament MVP weekend by falling an assist short of a triple double, tallying 28 points, 27 rebounds and nine assists, adding four steals and three blocks in the championship game win over Yeshiva University. The 27 rebound game tops NCAA Division III and is tied for the single-game high across all divisions.

Cambel continued her strong rookie campaign by helping The College of New Rochelle to an unblemished 3-0 week and earned Rookie of the Week accolades for the second straight week. After playing limited minutes in the Blue Angels’ one-sided conference opening win against Pratt Institute, Cambel posted two huge games en route to earning All-Tournament accolades in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament. In the tournament opener against College at Old Westbury, the guard set a new school record with seven three pointers, converting 7-11 from beyond the arc, and totaling a game-high 25 points. She backed up that performance with 22 points in the championship game win over Yeshiva University, connecting on six more triples. On the week, she shot .425 from the field and .438 on her three point attempts, connecting on 14 to up her season total to 26.

The College of New Rochelle returns to action on Friday, December 5, traveling to Patchogue, NY to take on St. Joseph’s College-Long Island in a non-conference game slated to tip at 7:00 PM.
