NEW ROCHELLE, NY –- The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) handed out its weekly women’s basketball awards Tuesday night, and Jah-Leah Ellis and Hannah Cambel were recognized as ECAC DIII Metro Player and Rookie of the week, respectively. The duo adds these awards to the HVIAC accolades they received earlier in the week.
Ellis and Cambel each posted strong weeks to help the Blue Angels post a 3-0 record, including successfully defending their Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship. The frontcourt-backcourt combination were each named to the All-Tournament Team, with Ellis taking home Tournament MVP honors after CNR defeated College at Old Westbury and Yeshiva University.
Against Old Westbury, Ellis tallied game-highs with 25 points, a career-high 27 rebounds, eight assists and three steals, while Cambel broke the school record by making seven three pointers, shooting 7-11 from beyond the arc, and matching Ellis’s scoring total.
In the championship game win over Yeshiva, Ellis, a senior forward, fell an assist short of a triple double, tallying 28 points, 27 rebounds and nine assists, adding four steals and three blocks in a dominant performance. Cambel, a freshman guard, poured in 22 points, connecting on six more triples to increase her team leading total to 26.
Ellis’s rebounding prowess has produced the top two single game performances in NCAA DIII this season, and is tied for the single-game high across all divisions. Cambel’s seven three pointer effort is tied for third in Division III for a single-game this season.
The College of New Rochelle returns to action on Friday, December 5, traveling to Patchogue, NY to take on St. Joseph’s College-Long Island in a non-conference game slated to tip at 7:00 PM.
