NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe Mustangs JV women’s soccer team has a lot to live up to when it comes to the varsity that won the 2014 NJCAA Division I national championship. But within their own sphere, they actually did quite well this season, finishing a very respectable 5-4, especially considering that the competition they play is all varsity-level.

“I’m very pleased with how this season went,” said head JV coach Steve Bunrstin. “Our effort was there all season long and while some of the rewards that the varsity gets are not there for JV players, they approached this with the impressive determination and the results, especially in the final match, really showed it.”

The JV Lady Mustangs wrapped up their inaugural season with a 1-0 win in front of their home crowd against Briarcliffe College of Long Island. The Mustangs shut out their opponents with improved defense. Neither keeper, Vanessa Vallejos nor Angelica Simao, were tested much in goal. Monroe got a late winner from Therese Cook, assisted by Vallejos.

Also in attendance at the game were coaching staff from local NCAA soccer programs seeking to recruit a number of Mustang sophomores, including Fatoumata Kante, Nykesia Lytte, Cindy Fuentes, and Kathleen Machado.
