Police are looking for the driver of a late model red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with significant front end damage which struck and gravely injured a man in the North End of New Rochelle at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
New Rochelle Police, including the department’s Forensic Unit, cordoned off an area on North Avenue near Quaker Ridge Road, in front of Beth El synagogue, closing off the southbound lane to all traffic. The area was treated as a crime scene.
The incident began Saturday morning following a traffic collision involving a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a black BMW SUV.
A passenger in the SUV and the driver of the red pickup truck, a male/hispanic got out of their respective vehicles, exchanged words, and both walked to the red pick-up.
According to police, the operator of the truck reentered the truck, and the victim proceeded to the passenger side door of the truck. The-red pick-up truck then drove off abruptly with the victim hanging on the passenger side door of the truck. The truck increased its speed and after a short distance the victim was dislodged from the truck and apparently slipped under the right rear wheel of the truck and was run over by it.
New Rochelle Police patrol units responded to the scene at 8:27 a.m. opposite 1354 North Avenue. Responding units found the victim, a thirty seven year old Bronx resident, lying in the roadway in the northbound lane of traffic, unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. The victim was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle where he is listed in critical condition with serious injuries to his head and upper body.
Police are looking for a red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with snow removal equipment including shovels in the back of the truck. In addition to the driver, their were three other people in the car, 1 male/hispanic and 2 male/blacks. The vehicle has an “air scoop” and considerable front end damage.
Police obtained video footage of the red truck on a police camera at the intersection of North Avenue and Eastchester Road (photos above).
A black BMW SUV was towed away from the scene and taken to NRPD headquarters as part of the investigation.
Police are requesting anyone who might be able to provide information about this incident or the red pick-up truck to contact Detective Michael O’Rourke at 914-654-2319 or the New Rochelle Police Desk at 914-654-2230.
