POMPANO BEACH, FL — George W. Bartels, former New Rochelle Assistant to the City Manager, died January 16 in his home in Pompano Beach, Florida. He was 94.
Mr. Bartels was born April 14, 1920, in New York City, to Henry and Isabella Bartels. In 1941, he married Joan T. Neuthard, who predeceased him.
He served six years in the U.S. Army and was supply officer at the Nuremberg trials. He remained in Germany until 1953, serving as High Commissioner for County Leonberg. In 1959 he was appointed Assistant to the City Manager in New Rochelle, NY, a position he held until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Bartels obtained the rank of Colonel with the U.S. Army Active Reserve. He was active in many civic organizations, including the Rotary Club of New Rochelle and the New Rochelle Day Nursery.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Sherber of Stamford, CT; his grandsons, Aaron Sherber of Baltimore, MD, and Jeremy Sherber of New York City; and his three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Rebecca, and Simon.
