NEW ROCHELLE, NY — It all started when a water leak damaged a ceiling in the Holy Name Convent. Father Biglin, Chaplain to the New Rochelle Fire Department, reached out to the New Rochelle Firefighters, and our members responded in a big way.
A rotating team of Off-Duty members have taken the convent under their wing. After fixing that ceiling, they “couldn’t just leave” the next one, so they fixed that too… And the next one… And there was repainting to be done, so they took care of that. And “What about these outlets? They need to be replaced too. No problem”. One member, a master carpenter, began fixing furniture. Shortly, the project will culminate with the replacement of the kitchen floor.
The experience was “very rewarding”, according to Firefighter Peter Escobedo. Firefighter Union President Byron Gray summed it up nicely: “It’s part of our ongoing commitment to help those in need and give back to the community, and especially to Father Biglin, who is a big part of the New Rochelle Fire Department”.
