NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Mirage Diner, a New Rochelle landmark for many years, is scheduled for demolition on Thursday. If all goes as planned, the destruction by grapple will commence Thursday at 5 a.m.
The City is requiring that the demolition on Thursday begin at 5 a.m. to mitigate traffic during the morning rush hour. Some of the equipment has already been pre-positioned. The City of New Rochelle will send out a reverse-911 call Wednesday if the demolition will proceed as planned.
The Mirage Diner will make way for the North Avenue residence hall project which will house students above and offer street-level retail stores.
Over the weekend, the College began the internal demolition of the diner.
Dumpsters for removal of debris will be placed on Summit Avenue, both for easy removal from the site and to act as an additional barrier during the demolition.
Talk of the Sound has obtained a memo sent to faculty, students and staff by Anne Marie Schettini-Lynch, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration.
Additional changes being implemented to maintain safety during demolition and construction are:
-
Traffic will be restricted from the parking lane on North Avenue in the immediate vicinity of the diner site.
-
The sidewalk will be relocated into the parking lane and lined with Jersey barriers for pedestrian safety. This altered pedestrian walkway will be in place throughout construction.
-
A temporary fence will be in place during demolition. Permanent fencing and perimeter lighting will be installed to secure the site during the construction period.
-
The bus stop at North Avenue and Summit Avenue will be discontinued during demolition and construction. Nearby stops at New Rochelle High School and near Dunkin Donuts should be used until further notice.
