NEW YORK, NY – Led by three first place finishes, the Iona College men’s indoor track and field team finished third at the 2015 MAAC Championships at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan. Freshman Liam Dee, junior Andrew Kowalsky and the distance medley relay quartet accounted for the Gaels individual MAAC titles.
Dee took home two titles for the Gaels, individually in the mile and as a member of the DMR. He edged Canisius’ Cooper Roach by just over a second and with his IC4A qualifying mile time of 4:06.82. Sophomores Ross Wightman and Chartt Miller also earned IC4A times, finishing back-to-back in fourth and fifth places in 4:11.66 and 4:11.93 respectively. Sophomore Andrew Tario earned eighth place (4:16.54) points in the event.
Kowalsky paced five Iona performers in the top five spots in the 3,000 meter event in 8:19.43. He and rookie Johannes Motschmann (8:23.18) both ran IC4A qualifying times in their gold and silver performances. The bronze was earned by freshman Alex Carter (8:27.86), while Tario (8:28.87) and senior Mike O’Dowd (8:29.79) finished fourth and fifth.
O’Dowd led for Iona scorers with a runner up performers in the 5,000-meter run. His time of 14:38.15 was just .19 seconds behind Monmouth’s Khari Bowen. Sophomore Brandon Allen was third (14:39.26) and classmate Andy Adamovics took fifth (14:53.77) in the 5k. Senior Quinn Raseman was the Gaels final scorer in seventh place (14:55.46).
Freshman Robert Kirsty (6th, 1:55.11) and sophomore Gabriel Dasilva (8th, 1:55.98) earned points in the 800-meter event.
Allen, Kirsty, Wightman and Dee paced the field in the distance medley relay event with their time of 10:06.12. They topped the Monmouth foursome by more than seven seconds.
Monmouth was the MAAC team champion with 200 points. Manhattan earned 126 in second while the Gaels were third with 90. Rider (85.5) and Saint Peter’s (70.5) rounded out the top five.
