NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle will present a lecture with Nicole Kear, author of the memoir Now I See You (St. Martin’s), heralded as a Best New Book by People magazine and Amazon, and chosen as a Must-Read by Family Circle, Redbook, Martha Stewart Living, Marie Claire UK and others. Kear will speak at the College on Tuesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in Romita Auditorium in the Mooney Center and sign books at a reception following her presentation.
Kear’s memoir tells a story of living life to the fullest in spite of devastating news. Learning while a 19-year old college sophomore that she had just ten to fifteen years of sight left sparked Kear to explore a whole array of new experiences. She joined circus school, launched an acting career, traveled the world, and kept her vision loss a secret until she became a mother and was declared legally blind. Kear will share the story of how she faced denial and gained acceptance of her situation while following her dreams.
“Nicole’s enthusiasm to explore opportunities in the wake of life-altering news demonstrates how embracing adversity can create a positive out of a seemingly negative outcome. There’s a message in that journey for everyone who struggles with adversity and the unknown, whether it is our students who are the first in their families to attend college, or any student who struggles to afford an education,” commented Dr. Rebecca Lafleur, Director of Women’s Studies at The College of New Rochelle.
Kear’s writing appears in The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, New York, Psychology Today, Parents, American Baby, as well as Salon, Huffington Post and xoJane. Her column, “Dispatches from Babyville,” has been running continuously for nine years in the Park Slope Reader, and she chronicles her continuing mis-adventures in motherhood on her blog, A Mom Amok.
A native of New York, Kear received a BA from Yale, an MA from Columbia, and a red nose from the San Francisco School of Circus Arts. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, and three children.
