NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Firefighters battled a 2-Alarm house fire on French Ridge for over 2 hours tonight in wet, cold and sloppy conditions.

The fire began on the second floor, sending flames shooting of the windows. The fire spread into the ceiling and attic, sending flames shooting out the other side of the house. Several times firefighters appeared to have the blaze under control only to see it start back up again.

Two people were home in the house at 16 French Ridge off Webster Avenue when the fire began. They both self-evacuated but one person, a twenty-year old man went back into the house to rescue several pets. He came out of the house with a dog but was overcome with smoke and was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital with smoke inhalation injuries. Three cats remained trapped inside, one was later found alive by firefighters.

The call came in at 7:55 p.m. The fire was declared under control at 10:08 p.m.
