Monroe Women’s Basketball Team Heading To Nationals For 12th Consecutive Year

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe women’s basketball team is headed to the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship tournament in Overland Park, KS held from March 17th to the 21st. This marks the 12th consecutive appearance in the national tournament by the Lady Mustangs.

The Monroe Women won the District N finals defeating Union County College 73-61 this past Sunday having previously secured the Region XV title.

Sophomore guard Breana Bey had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Union County College. Freshman Troniqua Black contributed 14 points and 9 rebounds, while freshman guard Shania Johnson scored 13 points off the bench to go with 5 steals. Aaliyah Mercer had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Monroe College faced Union County College on Sunday after defeating Lackawanna College, 78-52, in a semi-final matchup on Saturday. In that game, Karean Bellamy scored 17 points, and had 4 assists and two steal. In the Lackawanna game, Troniqua Black scored 13 points, with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks; Breana Bey scored 13 points and had 6 assists. Shania Johnson, who came off the bench to score 13 points, with 4 steals, 3 assists.

The Mustangs are the 10-seed and will play 7-seed South Suburban out of South Holland, IL near Chicago on March 17th at 11 a.m.
