ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Iona College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Navy in non-conference action at Max Bishop Stadium. The Gaels fell 2-1 in the opener and 7-1 in the night cap.
Junior RHP Mariano Rivera pitched 5.1 innings allowing both runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in the loss. Sophomore RHP Andrew Camiolo recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Iona took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by junior SS Vinny DeMaria. The Midshipmen tied the score in the bottom of the inning and took the lead in the sixth on one out single by RF Connor Deneen.
DeMaria, junior DH Zach Brown and rookie CF Jon Budesa recorded the Maroon & Gold’s hits in the contest.
In the night cap, Navy scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning and never trailed in the win. A Budesa RBI groundout in the top of the fifth accounted for Iona’s lone run.
DeMaria, senior 1B Jimmy Guiliano, junior C Alex Beckett and sophomore 2B Matt Byrne each recorded base hits, Guiliano’s and Beckett’s were doubles.
Graduate LHP Eddie Macaluso tossed five innings allowing three hits and three unearned runs. Sophomore RHPs Bill Maier and Vinny Martin and senior RHP John Daddino tossed one inning a piece for the Maroon & Gold.
