Romantic French Ballet at New Rochelle High School

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Giselle, a romantic French ballet, will be performed by the Ajkun Ballet Theatre at the Linda Kelly Theater on the campus of New Rochelle High School on the weekend of April 10-11.

Ajkun Ballet Theatre is a ballet company based in New York City, presenting classic and contemporary ballets in the Greater New York area, the Capital Region, Westchester County, the National Opera House in Albania, the Dance in Italy Festival, and throughout Australia.

The ballet is the epitome of romanticism, with exquisite ballerinas in flowing tutus flying weightlessly across the stage. Giselle and Albrecht, the protagonists, dance to a choreographic elegy full of lyrical tenderness. Ethereal, imploring and forgiving, Giselle dances all night to save Albrecht from the wrath of the Willis, and their merciless Queen, Myrtha.

The ballet premiered in 1841 to a triumph, and was staged at once across Europe and the U.S.

Ajkun Ballet Theatre’s restaging by Chiara and Leonard Ajkun focuses on the second part of Jean Coralli’s and Jules Perrot’s original choreography. In the moonlight of the forest, the talented children of New Rochelle’s Dance Performance Program set the supernatural mood leading to the professional dance of the Company.

Giselle is performed at the Linda Kelly Theater on the campus of New Rochelle High School, 265 Clove Road, New Rochelle, NY 10801 (tennis court entrance).
