LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona College softball team dropped a doubleheader at Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Herb & Joan Young Field. The Gaels fell 3-2 in the opener and 8-5 in the night cap.
Sixth inning rallies by the Broncs in both contests proved to be Iona’s downfall. The Maroon & Gold held a 1-0 lead in the opener before three runs by the Broncs put the home team ahead. The Gaels got a run back in their final at bat but could not push across the tying and go ahead runs, stranding the bases loaded in the loss. Iona led 5-2 heading to the sixth inning in the night cap. Rider scored six unanswered runs to earn the sweep.
Junior Briana King was 2-for-4 in the opener with a double and a single. Senior CF Allison Hand and sophomore 1B Kristen Turner drove in the team’s runs. Red shirt sophomore RHP Christine Costello took the loss. She pitched all six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
In game two, Turner was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and an RBI. She doubled to lead off the top of the second inning. Junior 3B Sarah Schutz and sophomore SS Katie Newton each had two hits in the loss. Newton recorded RBI singles in the second and fifth innings. Schutz scored a run and drove in another. Costello drove in a run from the designated player position. Junior RHP Jordan Courage took the loss in five innings of work.
The Gaels host Wagner Wednesday (Mar. 8) afternoon at Walsh Field.
