RIVERDALE, NY- The Iona College women’s lacrosse team defeated Manhattan 11-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Gaels move to 6-9, and 2-5 in conference play in the 2015 campaign.
Freshman Jenna Tolzmann led the Maroon & Gold with four goals, marking her fourth game in a row tallying a goal. sophomore Erin Pugh, senior Meghan Testoni, and junior Anna Kelly each added two goals a piece, with junior Mary Kate McCormick responsible for the final Gael goal.
Senior Blaire Nathanson recorded 10 saves in the victory, her sixth of the season.
The Gaels got on the board a minute and eighteen seconds into the game with Kelly’s first goal of the contest to take the early 1-0 lead. Iona held on to the lead for over five minutes before the Jaspers tied it up at one goal a piece with 23:12 to go in the first half. The teams then traded goals to make it 4-4 with 14:00 to go in the half. Manhattan took a 6-4 lead before a 3-0 Iona scoring run by McCormick, Tolzman, and Pugh took the Maroon & Gold into the locker room holding on to a 7-6 lead.
Iona took a 10-7 lead with 7:21 to play with two goals by Tolzmann and Testoni. Manhattans Domenica O’Brey got the Jaspers within two goals with 4:59 remaining in the game. The teams traded the final two goals of the contest to finish, with the Gaels coming out on top 11-9.
The Gaels are back in action on Saturday, Apr. 18th when they play host to Lafayette at Mazzella Field. Opening draw is slated for 1:00 pm.
