POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona College softball team moved to 7-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action with a two game sweep of Marist Saturday afternoon at Gartland Field. In the opener, the Gaels picked up a 3-0 win before claiming game two 6-0.
In the opener, redshirt sophomore Christine Costello pitched a complete game shutout to go along with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Courtney Miller drove in two runs courtesy of a second inning home run.
Miller’s second round tripper of the season gave Iona an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Costello drove in the final run of the game in the sixth inning, when she plated sophomore Kristen Turner with a single through the left side.
In the circle, Costello picked up her fourth win of the season, allowing four hits and seven walks while striking out four in seven innings.
The Gaels scored all of their game two runs in the second inning, as Costello connected on her third home run of the season, a grand slam, and sophomore Ashlyn Morris drove in two runs with a single.
Junior Jordan Courage shut the Red Foxes offense down for her third win of the season, allowing just one hit and four walks in seven innings.
Iona is back in action Sunday, when it welcomes Manhattan to Donald E. Walsh Field for two games, beginning at 12:00 pm.
