NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College athletics program was recognized for its high level of performance, as it placed in the top 100 of both the men’s and women’s standings for the 2014-15 Capital One Cup as well as the 2014-15 Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup.
The Gaels are the only MAAC institution represented in both ledgers of the Capital One Cup. The women’s athletic program tied for 79th overall in the final 2014-15 Capital One Cup standings released at the end of June. The Maroon & Gold was led by a ninth place finish by women’s cross country.
The men’s athletics program tied for 84th on the list among eight other institutions following an 80th place finish a season ago. The men’s cross country team finished eighth in the team standings at the NCAA Championship. Iona has finished in the top 100 of the men’s cup standings in four of the last five seasons, ranking as high as 68th in the 2011 standings.
The Gaels, 93rd in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup with 204 points, join the top 100 for the first time since an 81st place finish following the 2010-11 campaign. Iona finished fifth in the standings among Division I non FBS/FCS colleges and universities. The Gaels are the only MAAC school in the top 100, with Quinnipiac next on the ledger in 151st place.
The Capital One Cup trophy is awarded to the best men’s and women’s NCAA Division I athletics programs in the country. Schools earn points based on their teams’ top-10 finishes in NCAA championships and in final official coaches’ polls across 20 women’s sports.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports — 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
Stanford won the women’s Capital One Cup and the overall Directors’ Cup, claiming national championships in water polo and golf, and Virginia won the men’s Capital One Cup, claiming championships in soccer, tennis, and baseball.
