NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Two Iona College men’s soccer alumni made appearances for their respective Major League Soccer teams in contests during the International Champions Cup this past week.
In his debut for the New York Red Bulls, Franklin Castellanos ’14 tallied a goal and assist in a 4-2 upset victory over reigning Premiere League champion Chelsea Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena.
In the 51st minute, Castellanos pressured the Chelsea defense in the right side of the box. The ball popped free and Castellanos evened the score at one, inside the near post. In the 69th minute, Castellanos set up a cross to Tyler Adams, who scored to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 advantage.
Castellanos has appeared in 10 games for NY Red Bulls II in the United Soccer League this season. In 294 minutes played, Castellanos has totalled one goal and five shots for the squad.
Playing in front of 93,000 at a sold out Rose Bowl, Ignacio Maganto ’15 made the start for the LA Galaxy in a 2-1 loss to FC Barcelona. Maganto played 45 minutes in the contest, a 2-1 loss. This season in nine appearances, with six starts for the Galaxy, Magnato has tallied one goal, two assists and eight shots.
Castellanos and Maganto are the last two winners of the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year award, with Castellanos earning the recognition in 2013 and Maganto claiming the honor last season.
