Thick, acrid smoke filled the skies over the New York State Thruway Authority Maintenance complex as firefighters from Larchmont, New Rochelle and ultimately Harrison dumped thousands of gallons of water in an effort to bring the bring the massive fire under control. At least one firefighter was removed to an ambulance for what seemed to be smoke/heat issues.
Investigators are still in the process of determining the direct cause of the fire which completely consumed the building located along the Larchmont/New Rochelle border and sits alongside I95.
Workers in a building just next to the facility spoke of how their building strted filling with smoke as one worker shouted “the buildings on fire everybody get out of here”. Workers exited the building only to realize the massive conflagration underway right behind their building. “…it was very scary to be so close to it…” said one officeworker.
Bystanders reported hearing a series of explosions as the fire roared in its intensity. The billowing smoke could be seen for miles as the flames soared to over one hundred feet high.
