NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Calpulli Mexican Dance Company (Calpulli Danza Mexicana) presented a colorful program on August 22nd, at 4:00 pm, in the Ruby Dee Park at Library Green, adjacent to the Ossie Davis Theater of the New Rochelle Public Library. Celebrating the diverse regions of Mexico, the acclaimed Troupe presented a number of regional dances, in traditional costumes, to a crowd of over 200 people. The performance was originally scheduled for the library’s Ossie Davis Theater, but was moved outdoors on the beautiful afternoon so that the large audience could be accommodated. For three numbers, the performance featured New Rochelle children, ages 6 – 16 years, who have been studying with the Calpulli dancers in a free seven-week class made possible by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the New Rochelle Public Library Foundation. Over 40 boys and girls participated in the rigorous weekly sessions, experiencing the sounds, movement, history and culture of Mexico. The students were also garbed in regional costumes. Their performances were met with great enthusiasm and applause.
The Mexican Dance classes at the New Rochelle Public Library were one of over 300 workshops, performances, films and classes held at the main library and Huguenot Children’s Library this summer.
