This Thursday, September 10th, there is an important Democratic primary election in New Rochelle’s Council District Six.
I strongly endorse Liz Fried. I have known Liz for twenty years and have seen firsthand her intelligence, integrity, and deep personal commitment to New Rochelle. With an impressive professional and academic background in economics, as well as wide-ranging community experience, Liz will be an outstanding advocate for the people of District Six. Liz and I won’t agree on every issue, and that’s fine, because all Council Members should think independently and make decisions on the merits. But Liz and I do share a coherent vision for New Rochelle’s future and a common determination to make the most of our city’s great opportunities. We will be true partners, and that really matters to the quality and professionalism of local leadership. Turnout in primaries tends to be low, so many polling places have been consolidated for this election. Those who aren’t sure where to vote can find out here: bit.ly/NewRoVotes2015 The polls will be open from 6:00am to 9:00pm. With so much at stake, I urge Democrats in District Six to elect a leadership team that works together constructively. Please join me in supporting Liz Fried. |
With the election just around the corner. I want to take a moment to share a few thoughts about the team that can best lead our city for the next four years.
Marianne Sussman’s retirement after 12 productive years on the Council creates an open seat in Council District 6, and we are very fortunate that Shari Rackman is thrown her hat into the ring. An attorney, mother, a resident of New Rochelle since her teen years, Shari’s work ethic responsiveness and personal commitment to serving others are second to none. She will be a tenacious representative for the people in neighborhoods of northern New Rochelle. Many first-time candidates have a tendency to resort to slogans or overly simplistic solutions. I admire the fact that Shari instead delves into the complexities and trade-offs inherent in any serious discussion of public policy. She works to identify the right answer rather than settling for the easy answer, and when it comes to the choices most likely to achieve progress in New Rochelle, her instincts are outstanding. And while Shari possesses a clear-eyed understanding of the obstacles and problems that confront New Rochelle (and so many other cities,) she still approaches these challenges in an upbeat and positive spirit. Her blend of realism and confidence will be a great asset in local government. Finally, I’m impressed by the personal conviction with which Shari speaks about New Rochelle’s unique qualities, including its human diversity. She understands what makes New Rochelle special, and her interest in service is grounded in that perception. I have every expectation that Shari will be a cornerstone of a responsive, constructive Council majority, and I’m looking forward eagerly to serve with her. |
