NEW ROCHELLE, NY –It took the Monroe men’s soccer team nearly 110 minutes to finally get on the scoreboard, but a double-overtime, golden goal from Jaime Hinchcliffe lifted the #3 Mustangs to a 1-0 win and kept them undefeated on the season. The team is now 2-0-1 in three games in 2015.
It was strong play along the back line that was the recipe for success on Saturday, as the defensive combination of Khadim Saye, Nicholas Haas, Abdi Said and Pedro Neto helped goalie, Joe Green earn his second clean sheet of the season.
The winning goal came when Jordan Kinoshi’s aggressive play on the far side of the field led to a turnover. He found Hinchcliffe inside the 18-yard box and the Englishman put the ball inside the far post for the game winner. Kinoshi added to his team-best point total with the assist. It was Hinchliffe’s first marker of the season.
Monroe nearly won the game in the first overtime when Evan Finnegan blasted a shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off the crossbar and went away. Finnegan nearly scored at the end of the overtime when his shot went over the goal for a goal kick.
The Mustangs controlled the pace in the first half using crisp, short passes to maintain much of the possession. Kalifa Sylla had a shot on goal at 36:39 that hit the post.
Monroe outshot the Barons 15-8. They also attempted seven corner kicks to just three from Burlington. Green turned aside three shots to earn the shutout.
The Monroe College men’s soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 12, when they face Montgomery County College in Maryland. The kickoff for that game is 5:00 PM
