NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The Iona College women’s soccer team came up just short against the Towson Tigers, falling 1-0.
The Gaels outshot the Tigers in the contest, 14-12; however the lone goal was scored by Towson’s Natalia Pinkney in the 68th minute. Marissa Green fed Pinkney with a long pass along the sideline, and the junior did the rest, chipping over the outstretched arms of Gaels goalkeeper, Lauren Ferris.
The score was tied at zero heading into the half, due in large part to a huge part to Ferris making a great save mid-way through the first, cutting down the angle on a Tigers attack chance.
The Maroon and Gold saw sustained offense pressure in their favor the majority of the second half, peppering Towson goalie Taylor Sebolao with eleven shots in the second half, forcing her to make 6 saves.
The leader for the Gaels attack was No. 10, freshman midfielder, Mariana Jaramillo. She placed pressure on the Tigers, putting up 4 shots, 3 of which were on goal. Christine Rebus and Charlotte Stuart each took 3 attempts at goal as well.
Stuart had the best goal scoring opportunity for the Maroon and Gold, firing a shot from roughly 8 yards out right off the right post.
The Iona goalkeepers made six saves on the day, five by Ferris, and one by Abigail Roper in relief.
With the loss, the Gaels fall to 1-5-0 on the year. The next 4 games for Iona will be on the road, first coming against the Bucknell Bison in Lewisburg, PA, on Friday, Sep. 11.
