New Rochelle Police Respond to Shooting in Front of New Rochelle Day Nursery

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle police responded to a report of a shooting involving the drivers of two cars on Clinton Avenue near Thomas Place in New Rochelle. The incident took place in close proximity to the New Rochelle Day Nursery, a school for toddlers and pre-K students.

Police on the scene stated that it may have been a “road rage” incident.

Police have closed on the street and are now canvassing. There is glass on the street.

Robert McKinley who was working nearby heard several shots fired.

“I heard a few shots…not sure of how many” said McKinley. “By the time I got there, the cars were gone.”

Police have closed down Clinton Avenue from Thomas Place to Coliginia Avenue. New Rochelle detectives are now on scene.

UPDATE FROM WCPD: The New Rochelle Police Department put out a hotline message earlier this afternoon that two cars were being sought in connection with shots fired in New Rochelle.   

A short time later, Sgt. Steven Stromberg of the Westchester County Police observed a black BMW SUV fitting the description of one of the suspects vehicles on the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway at 12:53 p.m..  He followed the vehicle off the parkway and attempted to pull it over.  The vehicle proceeded to McLean Avenue and Coyle Place, where a passenger carrying a backpack jumped out of the car and fled on foot. The vehicle then drove off.

 

Sgt. Stromberg pursued the passenger on to private property off Coyle Place, where he was able to detain the suspect at gunpoint.  A revolver was subsequently located in the backpack.

 

The passenger suffered a leg injury trying to flee and is currently at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.  He will ultimately be charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon by county police.

 

UPDATE: Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital reported a person sought care for a gunshot wound at the Emergency Room shortly after the incident on Clinton Avenue. New Rochelle Police responded to the hospital where they located the second car and the second suspect in the shooting. The man was placed under arrest.

 

UPDATE FROM NRPD: Two dark colored SUV’s were stopped alongside each other yesterday near 115 Clinton Avenue at approximnately 12:41 p.m..  One individual from one vehicle fired several shots at the second vehicle, both vehicles then fled the scene.  Shortly thereafter, Westchester County PD pursued a dark colored SUV, eventually stopped by Westchester County Police and Yonkers Police on McLean Avenue in Yonkers.  An individual was apprehended after a foot chase. A second individual appeared at Mount Vernon Hospital with gunshot wounds.

  1. Low Crime Rate? Yea Right!

     It is time the City Council puts the statistics in perspective in relation to where the crimes take place. Yes, rates are down if you interpret the data that way. However Mr. Mayor the core as you say, is our downtown. Well our core is where all the crime is and if you look at the data and maps you will see that.

     

    Go to spotcrime.com or Trulia.com and you will see the main area that is highlighted is the same core we look to develop. These are also only the reported incidents. This is where people and Real-estate agents look before they buy or sell property in New Rochelle.


    Wake up and make some changes to free up some funds to put more police and fireman to work. New Rochelle we have an election coming up this November, think carefully about who you vote for this year as they will be the team/council that will be making decisions about New Rochelle’s future.
