NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle Women’s Volleyball team climbed back above the .500 mark on the season as they held off a late rally by visiting Farmingdale State College in non-conference action Thursday night. With the 3-1 victory the Blue Angels improve to 5-4 overall, while Farmingdale falls to 2-3.
Despite going up 2-0, the Blue Angels had their hands full with a Rams team that traded points for much of the first frame before losing 25-22. CNR appeared to gain momentum and confidence in the 2nd, as they cruised to a 25-14 win.
But everything changed in a 3rd set that took almost as long as the first two combined. With CNR leading 23-22, the Rams tied it off of a kill. That would be the first of an amazing 10 ties from just that point on, at which there was finally a winner – this time the Rams; 34-32. For the game there was 14 ties and 19 lead changes. In the extra points, the Rams had two chances to win before they sealed it, while CNR had two chances to round out the match, but failed.
In the fourth, CNR pulled out to a quick 3-0 lead before the gap closed and eventually was tied 14-14. The teams traded points, until a Blue Angel rally pushed the team lead to 22-18 in favor of the home team. At 23-20, CNR sealed the game on a Tamara Beckford (Bronx, NY) kill followed by a Farmingdale error to close out the match. The sophomore ended the night with seven kills.
CNR was led by sophomore Fabiola Padilla Rios (San Juan, PR) who had a game high 15 kills to go along with 13 digs and four aces. Junior Melanie Ann Soto Lopez (Gurabo, PR) ended the night with 27 assists and tallied five kills to go with four aces. Defensively, the Blue Angels were led by Tiany Perez Diaz (Juncos, PR) who picked up 17 digs.
