NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College men’s soccer team improved to 8-0-1 on the season with a 3-0 win over Bunker Hill Community College on Wednesday in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The team posted a 5-0-1 record in away contests this season.
Monroe got off to a slow start offensively, but managed to get four shots on goal in the first half. Niall Smith had a go at goal in the 27th minute, but his shot was turned aside. Kalifa Sylla and Gonzalvo Rodriguez each managed shots that were on target, but the game was scoreless at the half.
The Mustangs finally got on the board at the 54:14 mark. Nicholas Haas found Evan Finnegan who wouldn’t be denied as his shot found the back of the net. Monroe led 1-0. Ten minutes later, Finnegan returned the favor as he put a ball up for grabs and Pedro Neto got a head on it and scored. The Mustangs were up 2-0. The final goal came in the 70th minute when Jorge Paez buried a shot off a feed from Smith. Monroe went on to win, 3-0.
In the victory, the Mustangs outshot Bunker Hill, 25-4. Paez led all players with six shots. The Monroe College men’s soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 3, when they host the Community College of Rhode Island at 7:00 PM in City Park.
