NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The Rider Broncs got the best of the Iona Gaels Saturday afternoon, scoring twice and holding the Gaels scoreless for a 2-0 final. It’s the Broncs fifth shutout in their last six games. Sophomore Charlotte Stuart, senior Kim Marra, and freshman Brianna Hernandez all had shots on goal for the Gaels, however none got past Rider junior goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard, who made four saves on the day. The first offensive strike for the Broncs came in the 16th minute when Ellie Smith scored her third goal of the season off assists from Emily Schmitt and Kourtney Cunningham. Schmitt cross it into the box near the goal line where Smith was able to finish in close. At the 20:58 mark, junior Caroline Healy put Iona in a 2-0 hole when she headed in her fifth goal of the year via an assist from Hollie Kelsh. Rider outshot Iona 10-9 for the game, and each team committed one offside and had three corner opportunities. Senior Taylor Rice made three saves minding the net for the Maroon & Gold. The Gaels next contest is at Fairfield this Wednesday, Oct. 7. Iona will take on the Stags under the lights, kickoff set or 7:00 pm.
