NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The College of New Rochelle Women’s Tennis team earned their first game victories of the year Tuesday night against St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn), but it was not enough as the Blue Angels fell by a 6-3 margin.
Senior Marie Gomez (New Rochelle, NY) picked up her first win of the season at third singles with an 8-3 victory. At fifth singles, Iyesoqie Aghahowa (Bronx, NY) earned her first win as well, with a 8-1 win.
With the match starting off with doubles play, New Rochelle found itself only trailing 2-1 in the team score. Gomez and senior partner Shirley Garcia (Bronx, NY) picked up an exciting 9-7 win to close the lead from 2-0 to 2-1 after doubles play. The duo survived a comeback by the Bears. Up 7-2, the Bears doubles team evened the score at 7-7 before the CNR team closed out the game.
CNR (0-4, HVIAC 0-1) will return to action on Friday with another conference match against Vaughn College in Queens. First serve is 4:00pm.
