NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College men’s soccer team improved to 10-0-1 overall with a 6-3 win over Essex County College on Tuesday in New Rochelle. The team remained unbeaten and kept its #1 national ranking.
The Mustangs waited through an hour delay before starting and got off to a quick start, scoring in the first minute. An Evan Finnegan corner kick found the head of Pedro Neto who flicked the ball into the goal to make it 1-0, Monroe. Less than a minute later, Jaime Hinchliffe found Jorge Paez for the second goal, and the Mustangs had a 2-0 advantage within the first two minutes of action.
The Wolverines responded with a pair of goals in the next four minutes to even the score at 2-2. From there, Hinchliffe scored the next two on helpers from Gonzalo Rodriguez and Kalifa Sylla. In closing minutes of the half, Khadim Seye fed Evan Finnegan for the goal and Monroe led 5-2 at the half.
Essex struck first out of the respite, pulling within 5-3. Andreas Time scored off a feed from Finnegan to make the score 6-3, and cap the scoring. Monroe won by that same, 6-3 score.
The Monroe College men’s soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 10, when they host Essex College of Baltimore at 10:00 AM. The game will be played at Manhattan College in Riverdale.
