Monroe Volleyball Opens Season with Sweep in Nassau C.C. Tri-Match

Monroe Volleyball Goes 4-1 in Catawba College Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — It took 32 matches, but the Monroe College volleyball team finally lost on Saturday, but they went 4-1 in the Catawba College Tournament in Hickey, North Carolina.  The team is now 31-1 on the season.

The Mustangs went 2-0 on Friday, defeating Spartanburg Methodist College and Pasco-Hernando Community College.  Against Spartanburg, the Mustangs prevailied 3-0 and the sets went 26-24, 25-18 and 25-21.  Cristen Coryatt led the way for Monroe with 14 kills and seven digs.  Indira Rojas added 30 assists, while Neysha Gonzalez collected 13 digs.  The team beat Pasco-Hernando in four sets, by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 26-28 and 25-12.  Coryatt was the star in this match as well, posting a double-double of 11 kills and a match-best 21 digs.  Rojas also collected a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs.  Barbara Meximiano and Ashely Ramos keyed the offense with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

Day two of the tournament saw Monroe defeat Catawba Valley and Ridgewater by identical, 3-0 scores.  The team lost its first match of the season in the third match of the day when they fell to Owens Community College.  The Mustangs beat the hosts, Catawba Valley for the second time this season.  The scores were 25-22, 25-10 and 25-21.  Ashley Ramos finished with a double-double of 15 kills and ten digs.  Rojas collected 36 assists and eight digs.

The matches with Ridgewater went 25-17, 25-16 and 25-23.  Indira Rojas earned a double-double in this match with 17 assists and ten digs.  Maximiano had 15 kills, while Gabriela Nobrega raked in 12 digs.  The final match of the tournament saw Monroe fall to Owens Community College.  They won the first set, 25-23 and lost the next three, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21.  Coryatt had 19 digs and 12 kills.  Ramos had 17 kills and 11 digs.  The team went 4-1 in the tournament and have dropped just seven sets all season.

The Monroe College volleyball team returns to action on Friday, October 16, when they compete in the Florida State-Jacksonville tournament.  The first match is slated for noon against Gadsden State College.
