NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle Women’s Tennis team earned its first win of the season Friday afternoon in HVIAC league action against Vaughn College. After completing doubles action with a narrow 2-1 lead, the Blue Angels took five of the six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory. CNR is now 1-1 in HVIAC action and 1-5 overall.
Seniors Nancy Varughese (Blauvelt, NY) and Samantha Gomez (New Rochelle, NY) picked up their first win of the season at first doubles with an 8-6 win. CNR also took the 2nd doubles match as senior Shanique Roye (Bronx, NY) and sophomore Iyesogie Aghahowa (Bronx, NY) won by an 8-1 margin.
CNR won singles matches 1 through 5. Varughese won her first singles match of the year at 1st singles with a 10-6 win, while Gomez took 2nd singles by a 10-3 win. Roye was trailing 5-1 in third singles action, before going on an impressive run to come back and win 10-9, which was her first singles win of the year. Senior Marie Gomez (New Rochelle, NY) picked up her 2nd win of the year as she scored a 10-5 win. Aghahowa won her second straight contest, as she scored a 10-1 win at 5th singles.
CNR will get one day rest before returning to action on Sunday against Albertus Magnus. First serve is set for 1:00pm.
