NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Gaels trailed by a goal against Saint Peter’s heading into halftime, but with two goals in a span of 79 seconds, Iona flipped the script and secured their fourth straight MAAC win. Freshmen Daniel Huertas and Killian Colombie gave the Maroon & Gold the pair of goals needed to get past the Peacocks and improve their conference record to 5-3-0.
Iona outshot Saint Peter’s four to two in the first half, however they entered the locker room at the break trailing due to a nicely placed header put home by junior defenseman Jack Fisher.
The offensive possession in the second half was heavily in favor of the Gaels, who took advantage of their time with the ball in short, quick, effective fashion. At 66:47, Huertas scored his eighth of the year by means of a rebound off Saint Peter’s junior goalkeeper Jamie Cleland.
The two-time reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week now has nine points over his past four games, and currently he leads the conference with 21 points in 16 games played.
The Gaels notched their second goal as a result of sophomore Marcos Nunez once again feeding an eventual scorer. At 68:06, Colombie got a pass from Nunez, after it deflected off a defender, and scored his second of the season.
Junior goalie Julian Petrello recorded three saves in the win, all coming the Peacocks got their lone goal in the first half. The Iona defense protecting the lead well once they had it as they didn’t allow a shot from Saint Peter’s over the last 30 minutes.
The Maroon & Gold’s next opponent will be the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday, Oct. 24, with kickoff set for 2 pm in Hamden, CT.
