NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s soccer team sent their sophomores off in style, with an 8-0 blanking of the Community College of Rhode Island from City Park on Saturday.  Prior to kickoff, the 13 Monroe sophomores were honored in a pre-game ceremony where they were given flowers, gifts and were thanked by Athletic Director, Luis Melendez.  The honorees were Tiffany Martinez, Andrea Moonesar, Cindy Fuentes, Jordan Wainwright, Tiffany Reyes, Nicole Rivera, Kaitlin Shea, Brianna McGrath, Gabby Braga, Kathellen Sousa, Gabby Bluford, Vannessa Vallejos and Aline Delima.

The 7th ranked Mustangs came out and pressed the action early on as they familiarly do.  They had several scoring chances but couldn’t capitalize until the 21st minute, when Delima made a run and opened the scoring with a goal.  The game stayed at 1-0 through halftime.

Monroe came out attacking in the second half as well and earned a couple of scoring chances.  Elysa Varella and Ana Hess both missed scoring opportunities, but Bruna Tavarez would be more fortunate in the 51st minute.  She took a pass in the middle of the box from Rivera and blasted a line drive from the penalty spot into the goal to make the score 2-0.  Monroe was just getting started.

Just passed the hour mark, Delima scored her second goal of the game, this one a flick on net from way out that went into the upper-right corner of the net to give the Mustangs a 3-0 advantage.  Eight minutes after that, the score went to 4-0 when Brooke Smith found Rivera for a shot that hit the crossbar and landed on the goal side of the goal line.

At 72:22, Marta Turmo scored off a pass from Kathellen Sousa to make the score 5-0.  It was Turmo’s first marker of the season. In the 81st minute a pair of nifty passes from Virella and Delima and the ball ended up on the foot of Maia Williams in the middle of the penalty area.  The forward did the rest and the score went to 6-0.

The final two scores of the day came from Cardona and Sousa.  Hess picked up an assist on the Cardona marker.  Sousa’s goal was off a turnover and the Brazilian flicked the ball over the goalie’s head from about 40 yards out.

The Mustangs improved to 10-1 on the season and won their tenth-straight game. They also finished the year with a 5-1 mark in games at City Park.  Next up for the Mustangs is a rematch with ASA this week at Pier 5 in Brooklyn.  The Mustangs blanked the Avengers in their only meeting of the season back in September.
