NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona College women’s cross country graduate student Tara Jameson earned an individual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in leading the Gaels to a second place performance at Rosedale Park. Jameson was nearly eight seconds faster than the second runner to cross the line. The team finish snapped a 10-year conference title streak for the Maroon & Gold.
Jameson, however, extended Iona’s individual title streak to 10 straight years following back-to-back first place finishes by former teammate Kate Avery. Her time of 21:09.09 topped Niamh Ashe from Quinnipiac’s mark of 21:16.74. Grad student Melissa Hawtin was the Gaels second finisher in 10th place running a 21:43.40. Rookie Julia Kearley and sophomore Rachel Garn finished back-to-back in 15th (22:05.50) and 16th (22:06.84) places. Sophomore Annabel Gummow rounded out the Gaels scorers in 23rd (22:24.51).
The Gaels finished with 65 team points, falling 26 shy of team champion Quinnipiac – the runner up in its first two seasons in the MAAC. The Bobcats had a streak of NEC Championships prior to joining its current league. Monmouth was third with 85 points, followed by Rider (116) and Marist (122) to round out the top five.
The Gaels continue their championship season in two weeks at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Franklin Park in Boston, MA. The Maroon & Gold are the defending regional champions.
