NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s basketball team fell to Central Maine, 59-52, in the opening game of the Roxbury Community College Tournament in Roxbury, Massachusetts on Friday. Breanna Dennis scored ten points on 4-8 shooting. Jubinville finished with nine.
For the second straight game, the Mustangs held the lead early, taking a 17-10 lead in the first quarter. Up 11-10, Monroe closed out the quarter with a 6-0 run to take the 17-10 advantage. Gabrielle Jubinville made a layup, Camilla Kilinc buried a three-pointer and Destini Green made a foul shot to account for the points.
Centrail Maine outscored Monroe 13-8 in the scored quarter, but the Mustangs took a 25-23 lead into halftime. A Samantha Hines layup halfway through the period gave the Mustangs a six-point cushion, but that went down to two, 25-23 at the break.
Monroe held a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter, 41-40, but for the second-straight game, let the lead abandon them in the final ten minutes. Central Maine got hot in the third and led by 11, 36-25, with just under seven minutes left. The Mustangs showed some moxie from there, methodically chipping away at the lead and taking the one-point lead on a pair of free throws from Dennis in the closing seconds. Fatoumata Coulibaly got the rally going with a three-point-play. Kilinc contributed a three and Dennis scored the final six points of the quarter.
Central Maine took control of the game in the final ten minutes. They outscored the Mustangs 19-11 in the final quarter and won 59-52. Monroe was led by Kilinc, who finished with 12 points. Green had 11 rebounds and six assists. Jubinville chipped in with nine points.
